It took me a lot longer than usual to manage to make this reconstruction work, and I'm honestly pretty satisfied with the results.

1) So would I! But as far as I know, those songs could be just titles. Bruce was known to start his songwriting process by choosing a title, so it's certainly a possibility they were nothing but titles. But I surely hope those songs exist in some way or another!

2) That was a worry of mine as well! But while we have good quality live recordings of some songs (Rendezvous from the Palladium in '76, Something in the Night from Thrill Hill Vault), some others don't, and if we made an album out of 1976 recordings only, we'd end up with a pretty jarring listening experience. That's why, as much as it pains me, I included the 82 take of Frankie (which besides actually being in album quality, doesn't share any lyrics with Candy's Boy anymore!), and the alternate, unedited band take of The Promise (I honestly don't think a solo piano version would make the cut). But the vibe of these songs would certainly be much closer to their '76 versions! The Reconstructorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01958648744188740709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4237738197580821907.post-4894755112530973342021-02-05T02:28:08.582-03:002021-02-05T02:28:08.582-03:00This is really well done and I am certainly quite ...This is really well done and I am certainly quite impressed!! You've done as much research as it appears possible to bring a record to life that, as a Bruce fan, I believe really needs to exist!! I attempted the same thing and what I came up with is extremely similar. My only additional thoughts/comments are the following:

1) Of course, the early "Album #4" track listings also contain other titles pertaining to songs that may exist in some early form, but about which I have never been able find any information (such as Dawn Patrol, Drifter's Barrio, You're Gonna Cry, and others). Do you know any particulars about these songs other than their existence? Could they have evolved into any of the known songs from this period that appeared later? I would be extremely happy if the upcoming Tracks 2 compilation addresses these burning questions of mine,

2) I have wondered weather the 1976 studio recordings of the songs that you have included (had they been made) would have sounded more like their live performances from that time rather than the takes recorded later in the studio. Specifically, I am referring to Rendezvous, Frankie, and The Promise here. I personally feel as though their live performances from '76 (along with Something in the Night, which you did include live) have a certain sound and feel that is somewhat reminiscent of the BTR album and really helps to trace the arc of the transition between BTR and DOTEOT. I my opinion, although the quality is clearly more polished, this same vibe is not present as much in the 1977 or 1982 studio recordings.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07504924533068544511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4237738197580821907.post-44491933854100005292020-09-16T07:14:28.709-03:002020-09-16T07:14:28.709-03:00Thanks for this.
